Gillesager,
Roedovre These are mostly 4 storey blocks of housing dating from the 1950s. There are small gardens in front of ground floor flats, some surrounded by beech hedges, others open with paved edging to allow a slight change of level and demarcate the private from the communal. ![]() The caretakers maintain the greenspace areas, bringing in outside contractors only when necessary. This is paid for through the rents. They maintain the grass and shrubs at a high level - in the way requested by the residents. To combat vandalism and enable the greenspace areas to be more widely used, the middle section of the greenspace has been made more public and open. This "spine" of greenspace has become the core of the estate - a pleasant place to meet friends - to sit and talk - to play. Along it there is a sequence of sitting areas.
Some units now have closed-in balconies as a result of renovations which allowed tenants to choose whether to opt for them or not. Each courtyard has a small play space. Outside each of the entrances to the flats, all of which are kept locked, there are now small "meeting spaces". These function well and people use them as waiting spaces for their friends, places to bring young children to sit in the sun and "potter" around. They are small, informal but very valuable parts of the external environment of these flats. ![]() In the original scheme the architect had allowed for some small gardens in the form of "bays", but these are too exposed to the view of passers-by to encourage use - some have been kept for "history". ![]() An old bunker is now used as a roller blade area for older children (10-15).
This seems to be a very successful scheme where the redesign of the greenspace and the implementation of that design by the housing company has done much to improve the local quality of life.
