OVERVECHT PARKS Preliminary
assessment of the potential for change in Parkde Gagel
En levendig middelpunt Kinderboerderij (Children's farm, Lake and Hill areas - click here for english version)
Park de
Gagel - landscape and use character
zones: Problems Assets The
Core Area The upkeep of
boundaries of the Kinderboerderij is poor -
children and young people get over the fences and
get in among animals at night and frighten them and
passers-by. Visual quality
of this area is poor - despite being well
maintained it is unnecessarily structureless and so
looks messy. The full
potential of having a Lake within this area has not
been used -the Lake needs reshaping and different
edge details if it is to be more attractive for
people. More people at the water's edge would not
detract from the potential to support more wildlife
in and around the water (the water and its margins
could support a much greater level of
biodiversity) The present
restricted site and style of the layout of the
Children's Farm make it difficult to ensure modern
standards of animal welfare. Many local
people want to use their cars to visit this site so
the parking is often experienced as inadequate (but
should a district facility encourage car
use?) There is no
"sense of entry" to a special place. The Hill is an
underused feature - it is something "different" and
could be more of a focal point. Views from it are
blocked by the large 30 year old trees planted in
the 1960s without much thought to their exact
positions or impact on views from the
hill. There is
nowhere to sit and have a drink or a snack.
Everywhere is too exposed to view. There is a lack
of small scale intricate spaces full of visual
interest - texture, colour, scale. Lots of little
spaces would be needed to create the possibility
for sitting and watching the world go by -
essential if people were to be attracted into this
bleak area. Insufficient
"round walks" and no signing of the longer routes
that do exist within and around
Overvecht The Children's
Farm is a well liked feature of park this area
attracts many visitors - considered a special
feature in the northern part of Overvecht and one
that attracts outsiders to Overvecht and plays a
part in the "image" of the district The
Kinderboerderij appeals to older people as well as
children - it can act as a focal point for a
"family outing" There is a
fairly clear spatial structure already in place
which could be built on in any redesign- it is the
detailing which is poor and even could be described
as ugly in parts The presence of
a substantial area of water is always an attraction
point within any park - this pond has the advantage
of being fed by natural ground water In such a flat
landscape even this little Hill gives park users a
different experience - for children in particular
walking up to the crest of a hill and getting a
wider view is a special experience - for young
children playing on wheeled toys the chance to
slide down a slope is always entrancing and makes a
visit to the park special for them. In winter too
such a hill also gives young children a different
play experience Because of the
Children's Farm there is already a management
structure in place on the site - this could be
built on and linked with the development of good
catering facilities to make the management of this
area more economical With over 6000
people over 55 living in Overvecht there is a vast
number of potential clients for any catering
facility on weekdays, this would supplement at
weekends, holidays and evenings by those who make
family or group visits. This as yet untapped demand
for catering facilities means that there would be
sufficient clients to support a cafe but it would
only succeed in tapping the older persons market if
a high quality well maintained facility were
developed. To succeed such a facility would need to
be set in a much higher quality landscape than
there is at present - one with evidence of a high
level of maintenance. There is the
space to create a range of short strolling routes
through newly created , varied and interesting
spaces with lots of opportunities for sitting
together and talking. There is also the possibility
to organise longer round walks starting from this
central core of the park so that some family
members/ friends can go walking to the river or the
nearby countryside while others rest. Park de
