Outdoor areas in cities:

Cooper Marcus and Francis (1990), People Places, van Nostrand Reinhold.

Wurman, et al. (1972) The nature of Recreation, a handbook in honour of Fredrick Law Olmstead.

This is a very old book but if you can find a copy to look at, you will find it a very useful starting point if you are not an expert in recreation.

City streets and shopping areas:

Whyte (1980) The Social Life of Small Urban Spaces.

Schools:

Elderly:

Stoneham, Jane and Thoday, Peter (1996: 2nd edition ) Landscape design for elderly and disabled people

 

Essential Reading for local greenspace

Cooper Marcus and Francis,1990, People Places, Design guidelines for urban open space, pp. 69-169.

Note in particular the design guidance list and use these as checklists whenever you are planning or designing urban greenspaces.

See too Chapter 1 which deals with Urban Plazas and shows how to approach the site planning and design of these to meet user needs.
