THE SITES ARE TO BE ADDED
This comprises
2 secondary woodlands owned by the Sheffield City
Council and Chorus Engineering Steels. A bid has
been made recently to obtain European funding
(which will need to be match funded by other
bodies), to cover staffing, premises,
tools/materials and bought in services. If
successful, the European Development Fund (ERDF)
will pay 26.18%. Records of the exact apportionment
of funds spent will need to be kept. The European
Social Fund (ESF) pays for training volunteers in
environmental skills, with a view to enabling
people to set up in their own businesses - there is
a known poor skills base for this type of work in
the South Yorkshire area. Skills such as hedge
laying and dry stone walling form part of NVQ
courses; the aims of the ESF tie in with STEP's
approach to helping local businesses. The project
currently supports 3 New Deal people (under the age
of 24) on placement from BTCV Enterprises for 26
weeks, together with 6-7 volunteers, each working a
maximum of 2 days a week (in order to keep within
the requirements of the benefits system if they are
unemployed but not eligible for New Deal). The
training of these people is used as a means of
getting things done. 2 volunteers have had to drop
out recently, one of whom has left due to finding
employment and replacements are being sought - few
takers from the under 25s. The initial
projects undertaken within the Knoll Top Project
e.g. on footpaths, boundaries etc., were developed
around the core of trainees, having identified the
funds required and available for each specific
project. Increasingly work is carried out in
partnership with other bodies e.g. South Yorkshire
Forest and Wood Lane Farm (where the North East
Conservation Group, the South Valleys Conservation
Group and Sheffield Wildlife Trust are
based). Partnership and
links with groups and agencies is encouraged
throughout. This is through training and advice, as
well as lending tools and materials, in order to
foster mutual support.
