Information The Steel
Valley Walk is a recreational footpath,
approximately two and a half miles in length, which
forms a continuous link along the Little Don Valley
as far as Underbank. The route connects areas of
mature woodland and pasture with newly created
woodlands and wildflower meadows, as well as
passing through the industrial heart of the valley.
It affords views of the towns of Stocksbridge and
Deepcar as far as Wharncllffe Chase, Bolsterstone
village and Whitwell Moor. In the west the woodland
landscape beyond Underbank Reservoir is revealed.
Due to the
terrain and pattern of land ownership, the route
between East Bank has one or two strenuous sections
and involves the crossing of a number of stiles.
Therefore it is advisable that appropriate footwear
and clothing are worn. Remember that the valley is
located on the edge of the Pennines and the weather
can change rapidly Waymarking The route is
waymarked in both directions with the Steel Valley
Project logo in green on a white background, and
the direction is indicated by a yellow arrow on a
green background. Short Loop
& Riverside Walk The route
between Wortley Road, Deepcar and the western
boundary of Ellen Cliff Farm ascends more gently
and crosses no stiles. By continuing back to
Manchester Road along public footpaths it is
possible to complete a shorter, less strenuous
walk. The Little Don Walk - which also caters for
people in wheelchairs and the blind - can be
accessed from Manchester Road in Deepcar. A
separate leaflet is available. Buses There is
limited car parking on Station Road in Deepcar, and
on Old Manchester Road near Underbank Reservoir. A
bus runs the length of Manchester Road - it can be
caught at the stops indicated on the map. If you
would like to include the Steel Valley Walk as part
of a longer excursion, rights of way are indicated
on the relevant Ordnance Survey 1:25,000 map
(Pathfinder sheet 726.SK29 /39). Steel Valley
Walk Leaflet The leaflet
contains details of what can be seen at each
stopping place. Click
