Training for local environmental project workers

Training and Information for DTA Trusts

Training for local environmental project workers

Training available ranges from practical skills such as tree felling and planting, dry stone walling and foot path management, to health and safety and surveying skills. It is hoped in the near future to be able to award qualifications in these skills through a national awarding body.

There is also the opportunity to under take certificated training courses co-ordinated by the project, such as in First Aid at Work, herbicide use and chainsaw operations.

The aim of providing training opportunities is to enable people to develop skills through taking part in real projects in their area. People working with the project in the past have done so for many reasons. Some want to volunteer because they are interested in learning more about the countryside and taking part in caring for it. Others may enjoy working~ outdoors and keeping fit. Other people are looking for skills and experience to help them change career or find work. Whatever their reasons we always try to provide opportunities' for people to be involved.

The Project started taking Environmental Task Force placements in January 1998, these young people now undertake the main bulk of our practical activities, whilst working towards an NVQ qualification.

The 3 key areas that the Project will focus upon in the near future will be Fox Glen in Deepcar, Glen Howe Park at Wharncliffe Side and Knoll Top in Stocksbridge. As well as the practical activities undertaken at these sites the Project will continue to provide ongoing support to local community groups and schools in the area
