A Credit Union
is a not for - profit organisation, democratically
owned and controlled by its members, based on one
person one vote, no matter how much you have in
savings. In 1849 in
Germany and have since spread to the four corners
of the world. They are now the most common form of
saving and borrowing in Ireland and South
America. Stainforth is an old mining community - until recently the Pit dominated the "village". With the collapse of the coal mining industry from the1980s came severe local unemployment problems. The efforts of local people to regenerate their local community have done much to "turn the area round", so that it is now a relatively thriving place where most local people live in improved housing.
