The word 'CREDIT' in its original meaning refers to 'TRUST' and the word ' UNION ' simply a coming together for a common purpose. At its heart is the theme of mutual self help.

"From small acorns......"

What is a Credit Union?

A Credit Union is a not for - profit organisation, democratically owned and controlled by its members, based on one person one vote, no matter how much you have in savings.
Credit Unions are governed by law and an intending Credit Union must register its common bond (e.g. working with each other, members being part of a local community) with the Registrar of Friendly Societies in order to be approved and function. The Registrar needs to be satisfied that the Credit Union is managed appropriately and that it can manage members' money.

When were Credit Unions first established?

In 1849 in Germany and have since spread to the four corners of the world. They are now the most common form of saving and borrowing in Ireland and South America.

Credit Unions offer their members:

  • An easy and convenient way to save.
  • Loans at reasonable rates of interest.
  • Security and a sense of belonging .
  • Experience of democracy and mutual self help.
  • Financial security for the future.

Saver or borrower - it makes sense for everyone.

Stainforth is an old mining community - until recently the Pit dominated the "village". With the collapse of the coal mining industry from the1980s came severe local unemployment problems. The efforts of local people to regenerate their local community have done much to "turn the area round", so that it is now a relatively thriving place where most local people live in improved housing.
