It is hoped that these examples will help and encourage other community-based organisations as they seek to enhance the quality of life in their own communities.

The examples have been chosen so that as wide a range as possible of community-based initiatives are described.

It has been difficult to limit the number of initiatives described here as such a wide range of interesting community-based work is happening in this area of Britain. It was decided at the beginning to exclude the well known examples such as the Royds Community Association - such work has been well recognised and recorded in publications elsewhere.

The reader should, therefore, not think that inclusion here means that a particular example is the best in the region but rather that it is just an example of "how an individual group has made things happen". The examples described here include: establishing training initiatives (mentoring), bringing about general environmental improvements, building a new park, creating and running a Credit Union, starting a Rural Trust.
