Aims of the Trust

Colne Valley Trust is dedicated to the economic, social, environmental and cultural regeneration of the Colne Valley in West Yorkshire, covering the villages of Marsden, Slaithwaite, Linthwaite and Golcar. The area has been badly hit by the decline of the textile industry and the Trust was set up to encourage inward investment, promote communal self-help and initiate community projects.

Initially the intention was to become self-sufficient through the purchase and management of workspace, but this proved difficult. Instead, IT training via a trading subsidiary became both a major regenerative tool and a fund-raiser for the Trust, and this continues, though presently at a reduced level. Major successes for the Trust have been in the fields of Credit Unions, children's play spaces, Planning for Real consultation, business planning advice, environmental working group formation, public transport improvements and Agenda 21 awareness-raising with young people. Colne Valley Trust is presently in a transition stage. With a major NLCB grant under our belts, we are to move to new premises, appoint new staff and take on the management of a large community building in association with a local management committee. Objective 2 funding will assist us in our declared aim for the future of targeting rural deprivation in our area.

Benefits expected

We expect to gain from the DTA the following:

Information about the Movement around the country and ideas from the network that we can use.

Support for the DT Movement through relationships with central government.

Opportunities to meet with other practitioners.

Training opportunities organised at national and regional level.

Limited financial support for special purposes or in times of crisis.

Opportunities for publicity for our own work.

The right to influence the direction of the Movement through meetings and conferences.

Benefits received

We have received all the above from the DTA at different times. Especially important to us have been the small but important amounts of financial support at critical times. The regional structure has become a very valuable asset for us since the appointment of the paid officer. We feel that Colne Valley Trust, for its size, has also contributed a great deal to the national and regional movement, and it is perhaps more important to talk about this two-way process than simply about what we get from the central team. Neither can exist without the other, and it is vital for both 'sides' to keep this in mind.
