- present work in connection with the action subject
The institutional goal of the Faculty of Architecture is to give the "laurea" (master's degree); the degree is a legal prerequisite for taking the exam that qualifies to the profession of architect, that is, to professional practice as an independent professional or as an employee; it also influences the position held in public administration; the structure of the faculty depends on the didactic goals and on the directives of the European Union in relation to the free circulation of professional figures; The faculty of Architecture of University of Rome Tre started off in 1993 with a programmed number of 250 students per year. Today it has about 1400 students, with about 70 tenured professors and researches and an equal number of professors and collaborators on annual contract.
The course structure is based on eleven disciplinary areas, of varying relevance: architectural and urban design, restoration, history of architecture, structural analysis and design, architectural technology, technical physics and works, real estate assessment, urban and territorial planning, economic and legal social disciplines, mathematics, representation of architectural space.
Teaching is directed at integrating the acquisition of theories, methods, and disciplines, with a parallel development of critical awareness and ability to perform; contribution to this goal is given by single-discipline courses, integrated courses and especially by design laboratories. Teaching consists in a total of thirty seven course units; the program lasts five years and is divided in ten semesters. The fifth year, dedicated to a critical reflection on previous studies in order to complete them in accordance with specific disciplinary or thematic interests, is characterized by the possibility of choosing the topics to be studied; among these, there are: Landscape architecture, Parks and gardens architecture, Technologies for the Built Environment Conversion, that can be considered in connection with the Action C11 subjects. Moreover, the Faculty concentrates on post - graduate studies; at the moment, it offers three one-year programs, as further described.
The institutional goal of the Department of Architectural Science and Design &endash; (Di.P.S.A.), which comprises almost all the teachers of the Faculty of Architecture, is that of co-ordinating research, higher-level teaching and internal and external projects, and the organization of the various disciplines, for the purpose of providing adequate responses to cultural, scientific and professional transformation in the field of architecture. Research involves various disciplinary sectors and is co-ordinated in five different sections: Urban Design and Building Planning (co-ordinator Prof. Grütter); Mechanics and Building Techniques (co-ordinator arch. Baggio); History, Preservation and Restoration in Architecture (co-ordinator Prof. Ciucci); Envirnmental Planning Technology (co-ordinator Prof. Martincigh); Urban Planning (co-ordinator Prof. Piccinato). In support of research and design activities, seven laboratories have been created, endowed with equipment necessary to the following work areas: CAD (Scientific Supervisor Prof. Giangrande); Building Procedures, Materials and Components (Scientific Supervisor Prof. Lannutti); Design (Scientific Supervisor Prof. Giura Lngo); Experimenting and Research on Materials and Structures (Scientific Supervisor Prof. Giannini), Urban Planning (Scientific Supervisor Prof. Ranucci); Graphic Representation (Scientific Supervisor Prof. Maestri); Restoration, History and Recovery of Construction (Scientific Supervisor Prof. Marconi). The main focus of interest of the department is the city of Rome and its urban environs, its historical heritage and the transformation under way. As for research, this is particularly emphasized in the section on Urban Design and Building Planning and is used both as instrument for the production of specific knowledge and as a methodological contribution to design. Much importance is also given to the communication and sharing of working experiences, both in the localities where research is carried out ( neighborhood laboratories) and on a larger scale (internet). Among the other sections, it is important to note certain specific fields of inquiry corresponding to current interests in the scientific community, such as: Communication of Urban Strategies; Sustainable Development in Local Environments; Mechanical Characteristics of Traditional and Innovative Materials; Restoration of Historical Structures in Seismic Areas, etc. External activities are mainly commissioned by public institutions: the Town of Rome, the Lazio Region, other local, national and international institutions, and generally consist in preparatory studies and elaborations for planning and projects. In particular, through its laboratories and work groups, the department contributes noticeably to the work for the Universty of Roma Tre currently under way in the Ostiense district, where buildings for the new faculties are being created by restoring and recovering buildings previously used by the industry. The department, as above shortly mentioned, also holds a number of postgraduate course: New Urban Policies (director Prof. Piccinato); Sustainable Interactive Design and Multimediality (director Prof. Mortola); Architectural Restoration and Building, Urban and Environmental Recovery (European Master, director Prof. Marconi). Finally there are two Ph. D. programs: Sustainable Urban Development (co-ordinator Prof. Quilici) and Territorial policies and local plan (co-ordinator Prof. Piccinato). Among all these post graduation courses, the Ph. D. program: "Sustainable Urban Development" is of some interest for the Action subject and could be connected to it.
