Research by the London Assembly shows that up to
1000 ha of greenspace in the capital has been lost
to development over the last 10 years. In the same
period spending on Parks has fallen from £683m
in 1990 to £583m in 1999. The city is facing a
catastrophic decline in its greenspaces Open

p. 82 (in Polish) The book
consists of 8 chapters with the following problems
discussed over: · The
ecological function of greens widely discussed
(their influence on air quality and ventylation,
bioclimatic changes, noise reduction, water
circulation, geomorphological processes
etc.); · The aesthetic
role of greens; · Recreational,
didactic and economic function of greens.
As an annex
there are enclosed the lists of the number of
species (trees and bushes), which have proved their
resistance to anthropopresion &endash; air and soil
pollution, shadow and wind speed. Each of them is
recommended for different land use and land cover
types. The final part
of the book has the standards of greens coming from
various periods, but not obligatory nowadays
(distance from buildings, infrastructure elements
as well as distance between different tree spices
etc.). Smogorzewski J.
1968, The Pattern of the Urban Open Spaces, Seria
prac w_asnych No 157, Warszawa, p.143 (in
Polish) One of the
first detailed elaboration describes the urban open
spaces. It gives their definition, present the
structure and pattern as well as their role in
urban area (on different levels &endash; social,
structural, natural etc.). The Open Spaces are
divided into three main groups because of their
localisation in three different urban zones: inner
one with dense building, transition zone with
intensive structure changes and external zone with
slowly changes and the open space domination.
According to the function of the urban open spaces
the main standards are established e.g. number of
square meter per inhabitant, minimum distance to
the recreational area, length and width of the open
space belts etc (they do not exist officially
nowadays). The general principles of open spaces
planning and design are presented as well e.g.
connectivity with the other open spaces inside and
out of the city, their proper pattern are suggested
etc. Szulczewska B.,
Kaftan J.(ed.), 1996, Shaping of the Town Natural
System, Institute of Physical planning and
municipal Economy, Warszawa, s. 72 (in
Polish) The book
consists of 5 chapters. The history of
greenstructure and green open spaces planning,
mainly in Poland, is presented at the beginning.
Then the changes of the town natural environment
are introduced (shortly each component is discussed
&endash; process and tendency of its changes). The
main part of the book focuses on describing the
Town Natural System concept, its assumptions and
structural elements (core areas, nodes, ecological
corridors), its role in creating the town/urban
condition on three levels biological, hydrological
and climatic. The general principles of the TNS
concept implementation in planning practice are
listed at the end. Szuma_ski M.,
et all, 1994, The green area classification,
Diariusz Katedry Projektowania w Architekturze
Krajobrazu No 1, SGGW Publishers, Warsaw (in
Polish) An example of
Warsaw Agricultural University periodic written by
landscape architects, whose research have been
focused on classifying the urban green area
according to its social role &endash; mainly
recreational. They widely present new
classification of the urban green area, which
consists of the main seventh types: parks, the
other small green area (max. 2 ha), cemeteries,
sports area, recreational centre and resort,
allotment gardens, service base of green area. Each
of them is consists of more detailed groups of
green area e.g. parks consist of the forest park,
zoo, botanical parks (garden), ethnographical parks
etc. The constructed classification cover all
potential urban green area and is a good basis for
establishing the common data base of the urban
green area. Benedict M.A.,
