Note: half Sheffield's
agricultural land is moorland (upland heather, grass and
scrub) with a carrying capacity of only 1 sheep per hectare
- its main use is for recreation (including privarte
game-shooting but this is for a few weeks in the late summer
and autumn only). This land is classed as agricultural
upland.
Rotherham adjoins
Sheffield to its east and has a population of 248,000 -
which brings the population of the contiguous built up area
to over 700,000 persons. The two towns are part of the South
Yorkshire County administrative area which includes the old
coalfield and manufacturing towns - together they have a
population of over 1,200,000. South Yorkshire lies at the
southern end of the Yorkshire and Humberside Region of
England.
