Need for Greenstructure Planning in the UK

Sheffield is an industrial city in the north of England; it is the fifth biggest municipality in England.

Population - 513,000 .

Area - 36238 hectares.

Density of population - 14 persons per hectare
Note: this density does does not reflect the true situation as it is experienced by those living within the built-up area. The density within the built-up area, excluding both the rural area and the Peak Park, is just over 40 persons per hectare.

Note: half Sheffield's agricultural land is moorland (upland heather, grass and scrub) with a carrying capacity of only 1 sheep per hectare - its main use is for recreation (including privarte game-shooting but this is for a few weeks in the late summer and autumn only). This land is classed as agricultural upland.

Rotherham adjoins Sheffield to its east and has a population of 248,000 - which brings the population of the contiguous built up area to over 700,000 persons. The two towns are part of the South Yorkshire County administrative area which includes the old coalfield and manufacturing towns - together they have a population of over 1,200,000. South Yorkshire lies at the southern end of the Yorkshire and Humberside Region of England.
